Building maintainable websites with Statamic

Published September 24th, 2024

I feel so thrilled to have been invited to speak at the Laravel Worldwide Meetup online on September 2024, 2004. Streamed live from Australia starting at 10:30pm ACST, it was a great opportunity to bring my Aussie-isms and love of Statamic to the Laravel community, providing tips on how to build maintainable websites in Statamic. Inspired by years of lessons learned, this talk goes through practical and proven tips, advice and ideas to help you focus on maintainability: that means reusability, extensibility and supportability.

You can stream the entire meetup on YouTube, including Max Brokman’s superb talk (and one that I definitely could relate to), or jump directly to the start of mine. I’ll give you a quick introduction to Statamic, and then take you through these 7 tips to help you out:

  1. Read the docs

  2. Add the SALT

  3. Do things the Statamic (and Laravel) way

  4. Embrace fieldsets

  5. Organise your files

  6. Write reusable code

  7. Construct a Page Builder

  8. Make a Starter Kit

  9. Community

And yes, there’s 9 there. When you factor in 0 index and being late at night, that’s OK though, right?

There are so many ways to build with Statamic, and the aim of this talk is to give you the ideas and guidance for how to build a site that will be a joy to build now, a pleasure to work with while you support your clients, and extensible for years to come.

Reach out if you have any queries or want to have a further chat about any of the ideas in this talk!
